Salesforce Is Changing How It Charges for AI. What Does That Mean for Your Business?

Salesforce is preparing a new way to charge for AI assistants that work with its platform. The company is targeting November 2026 for new controls, agent registration and a billing model. That is a target, not a confirmed date when charges begin.

As of October 30, Salesforce says the rate for these interactions has not been announced and this new usage type is not being metered. It promises 30 days’ notice before metering starts.

If your business is connecting AI tools to Salesforce, this is worth understanding before you build more automation.

So, what’s changing?

Salesforce plans to give each registered AI agent its own identity and permissions. Successful calls that agent makes through MCP or a direct API will be counted as Headless Platform Interactions. In plain English, Salesforce will count requests made by the connected assistant and charge for them using Flex Credits.

For example, an assistant might retrieve customer details, review opportunities or update records. One request you type could require several calls to Salesforce.

This is about agents connecting to Salesforce. Salesforce says traditional integrations keep their existing pricing and security arrangements.

Could ChatGPT or Claude be affected?

Yes, depending on the connection. Salesforce’s own documentation lists ChatGPT and Claude among the clients that can connect to its hosted MCP servers.

Simply having a ChatGPT or Claude subscription does not create this Salesforce charge. The relevant question is whether an assistant is making calls to Salesforce under the new agent billing model.

A custom AI assistant could also be affected. Using a direct API connection instead of MCP does not, by itself, put a registered agent outside the announced model.

Will this increase your Salesforce bill?

Possibly, but there is no reliable per interaction cost to calculate yet. Salesforce’s announcement says the credit multiplier is still to be announced. Your usage, available credits and contract will determine the eventual impact.

This is not an automatic increase for every existing customer. Salesforce says existing customers using agents through APIs must register those agents and move their connections to the new model at renewal.

Customers purchasing on or after September 17, 2026 must register API agents within three months of Salesforce’s notice that Agentic Identity is available. For Salesforce MCP servers, that three month registration requirement applies to all customers.

The new interaction meter applies to active production environments. Salesforce excludes sandboxes, scratch orgs and Developer Edition environments from this particular meter. Other services used by a solution may have their own charges.

What should you do?

Start by identifying which AI tools connect to Salesforce and what they do. Ask whoever manages those connections whether they use MCP, direct APIs or another approach, and how Salesforce will classify them.

If you are planning new AI automation, ask for a cost review before committing. Once Salesforce publishes the rate, estimate how many calls the complete workflow makes, rather than assuming one question means one billable interaction.

Check your renewal date and ask your Salesforce account executive how the registration requirements apply to your contract. Keep watching for the published rate and formal notice.

Our thoughts

AI can save time, reduce repetitive work and make customer information easier to use. But technology still needs to make financial sense.

An assistant might save your team hours each week. You still need to understand what it costs to run.

At MotionDog, we believe businesses should understand both the benefits and the costs before making technology decisions. If you use Salesforce and want help reviewing your AI connections, get in touch.
